Pulp Fiction
Year: 1994
Movie: Pulp Fiction: classy drugs, corruption, hit men and a briefcase.
Artist: Chuck Berry
Song: You never can tell: a song about love and irony
This week is Dance off week!
A light, fun and flirty blog post which should put a tingle in your toes and smile on your face.
Pulp Fiction was a 1994 cult movie, in a nut shell, is about different people interpreting the same scenarios involving about classy drugs, corruption, hitmen and a briefcase.
The scene this week is the dance contest Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) and Vince Vega (John Travolta) competed in. The dance off is set in a ‘50s themed restaurant and the song You never can tell by Chuck Berry released in 1964.
I suspect from the song lyrics there is a certain level of irony involved in using this song for this scene, but that is just speculation.
Re-releasing music for movies is not a new concept, however it is a clever way to reach a new generation of people. Quite often younger people will engage with older music if it was once really popular, The Beatles, Lead Zepplin, Jimmy Hendrix, Deep Purple etc. But you wouldn’t really see youths wearing a Chuck Berry t-shirt. This is where a movie like Pulp Fiction helps to revive music and artists such as Mr Berry.
Basically the movie made the song a timeless hit...and here’s how:
The song was released 35 years ago by a popular artist of its time. Then it went in to music history archives never to be spoken of again. Suddenly 35 years later Pulp Fiction was made and Chuck Berry’s song was dug out of its grave, sewn into a dance scene with two famous actors and cha-ching the song was making money once again. Mr Berry no doubt would have been very happy for his song to be used in one of the most well known movies in the 20th century.
Quentin Tarantino is an epic director whose brain should be dontated to science. One has to be consciously aware of one's surroundings within the film, other wise you may as well rewind the film and start again.
I asked a friend who is a massive Pulp Fiction fan why she bought the soundtrack to this film and she replied she loved the movie so much and there are so many good songs on it. And then she mentioned her dad had bought the soundtrack as well...
